GlassPoint Demonstrates Technology Robustness During Severe Sandstorm

MUSCAT, Oman – GlassPoint Solar, the leader in solar enhanced oil recovery (EOR), recently achieved an impressive performance milestone at its pilot project with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). The solar steam generator operated without fail during a two-day sandstorm that hit PDO’s Amal West oilfield.
Even with peak winds reaching 53 km/h (33 mph), the solar field successfully produced more than 50 tons of steam each day, exceeding rated capacity. The sandstorm performance demonstrates the robustness and reliability of GlassPoint’s enclosed trough technology. A fully automated washing system was deployed at night to restore optical efficiency. When wind speeds returned to normal the following day, the solar field produced 76 tons of steam, achieving 100.4% of modeled performance.
GlassPoint’s technology was designed to overcome the harsh desert operating challenges common throughout Gulf oilfields. The mirrors and other vulnerable components are sealed inside a glasshouse structure to protect them from wind, sand and dust. Other solar technologies with exposed mirrors require expensive cleaning processes and risk degrading the mirrors in severe storms.
GlassPoint’s pilot project with PDO has been operating successfully since late 2012 and continues to exceed contracted performance targets. The system serves as an operational baseline for large-scale projects in Oman and throughout the region.
